The diversity of languages has always been fascinating to me, as I am very much interested in traveling and discovering different cultures, especially when I started to gain an interest in K-drama and K-pop, which, I may say, have prompted my curiosity about anything that relates to Korea. Then, my love for the country deepened more when I was given a chance to be an exchange student at Gimcheon University, South Korea, wherein I was able to immerse myself more in the country’s culture, and especially in its language, called "hangugeo (한국어)" That has motivated me to start learning it at my best effort. Hence, I started to attend a free Korean language class offered by the university I was attending there. The class consists of Korean reading, writing, and listening. At first, I was overwhelmed since the discussion was in pure Korean and that I had to learn and understand everything from scratch. Learning it was hard, but I never had the thought of giving up since I know that learning it is for the sake of my better appreciation of the country and for my ease of living there.
Throughout my 2-3 years of language learning, I have encountered many realizations of the importance of learning a foreign language, which includes social, economic, and political benefits. It opens up the opportunity for us to communicate and build meaningful relationships with millions of people around the world. It can even be a beneficial aspect of our employment prospects, which, according to Namahoe (2021), "the demand for language skills is greater than it’s ever been before (and it is only getting bigger!). We see increasing demand for multiple languages across sectors, regardless of the size of the business.” This only emphasizes how being a multi-lingual is a "must-have" as employers are in search of individuals that can venture into the global economy. Lastly, learning a foreign language has made me more open-minded towards different cultures and their people, and I think this is the most valuable benefit for me because it has made me see the world from a different perspective and made me value diversity and acceptance. Furthermore, I believe that my journey of language learning has enhanced my life in many different ways. Acquiring language skills does not only offer the benefit of simply learning how to talk, write, or read. Nevertheless, it opens the door for us towards a world of opportunity. With all that being said, I hope that this calls for the urgency that we need to understand that language learning is a need for everyone, and it is time to make it a priority, especially in our educational system. I JUST PASSED THE TOPIK I EXAM!!!!! AND I GOT LEVEL 2!!!!! Okay, I can't still believe that I was able to pass, so please bear with my excitement HAHAHA I just feel like my Korean is at level 1 since It has not been a year since I've seriously started learning the Korean Language. ANYWAY, I thank God for letting me stay motivated and pass the exam! As you can see from the title, I am here to share to you guys how I self-study learning the Korean language! Although, way back when I was in Gimcheon University, I did attend a Korean language special class, but, the problem is that the whole lecture was in Korean, the textbooks are in Korean and all of my classmates already knew at least the basics of it. So, I did A LOT of self-studying to catch up and learn Korean as much as I could. And here are some of the tips on how I self-study: 1. Know your reason of studying it! Everyone has a reason for doing something. Learning Korean or even other languages needs COMMITMENT AND CONSISTENCY. That reason of yours will be your motivation to commit yourself to start learning Korean and be consistent in learning. Just keep in your mind your reason throughout your learning process. As for me, my reason for learning Korean is that I have been a fan of Kpop and Kdramas since 2012, and that has been the start of my love for the country. When I started to learn the language, I learned to appreciate more the country, and that is what keeps me striving on learning it more. 2. Learn the Hangeul Everyone starts with learning the alphabet, and just like going back to when we are still a child in pre-school, try to just keep on writing the alphabet until you master it and of course, as you memorize the alphabet, try to master it as well its pronunciation. 3. Gather your study materials It is good to provide a notebook just for your Korean learning, where you can write down your practice sentences, the words, and the grammar that you have learned for the day. Here are some of the materials that effectively helped me: 1. talktomeinkorean.com- They have an app with 10 levels and 30 lessons at each level. This really helped me to fastly learn how to speak Korean and communicate with my classmates when I was in Korea. It is very interactive and convenient for me, as I can listen to it whenever I am doing something, which does not only develop my speaking skills but as well as my listening skills! 2. Papa Go- It is like Google translate and what I do with this app is that whenever I am watching any Korean stuff, I repeat after the phrases or words I hear from what I am watching and then record them into the app to know its meaning, then I will write it down in my notebook. 3. Naver dictionary app- Here you can look up the words you don't know and look at how those words are used in the sentence, and practice them using in your own sentence. 4. Hello Talk- One of the barriers to not effectively learning a language is having no one to talk with, but with this app, I get to interact with native Korean speakers even though I am now already here in the Philippines. In the app, I get to ask their comments on how to use a certain word or grammar in a sentence, and also I post about my daily life in Korean. 4. Set your goals!
Be realistic when setting your goals by assessing yourself on how many words you can memorize and how many lessons you can study for each day and that is where you challenge yourself to make time for learning Korean. As for me, I try to memorize 10-20 words each day and take 2 lessons in TTMIK, having a total of 3 hours of studying for each day. Then, at the end of each week, I try to assess myself by making sentences using the words and grammar that I have learned. 5. Record yourself while speaking Try to record yourself while speaking Korea, so that you can hear yourself and assess how you can improve your pronunciation, dictation, and intonation more. 6. Watch anything Korean This is something that I do every day and probably the thing that I like the most out of all the ways I study Korean. As you watch K-dramas, movies, or variety shows, you can practice your listening skills and even recognize the words and grammar you have learned. You can get phrases that are useful in everyday conversations and also see how their intonations are done. THAT IS IT! I hope that you enjoy studying Korean as much as I do and that my tips can somehow be of help on your journey of learning. FIGHTING!!!! The Mabini Dialogue series: “South Korea’s New Southern Policy: Welcoming the Asian Tiger to ASEAN”11/29/2019 I FINALLY SAW ONE OF MY FAVORITE KOREAN ACTORS!!!! AND IT'S NO OTHER THAN PARK SEO JOON!!! And yes, I am still hyped up. I can't believe that I saw one of the first Korean actors that I stan. I have always been a fan of Park Seo Joon since the Dream High days. His singing, acting skills, visual and his humbleness have made me hooked up! I mean who wouldn't fall in love with this man??? His a total package! My daydreaming of when I can see this man has finally made into reality when Bench has posted an announcement about his fun meet and of course, I did not hesitate to prepare my savings and I did even go to the nearest mall during my lunch break, and luckily I scored a Gen Ad ticket! THIS IS IT! I went alone to the fun meet as my cousin did not had the chance to have a ticket as it goes immediately sold out, but I met a lot of other fans as we wait for the opening of gates.
I still cannot believe that I finally saw him in person and that I can hear his deep voice in live. The whole experience has made me fell in love with him more, as I saw him how playful, how he tries to interact with his fans despite the language barrier, and how much he is passionate about his job. I just really hope that there will be a next time and I will surely score a VIP ticket. Everything was just that worth it for Park Seo Joon. |
